Bootstop

Privacy and terms

The short version

Bootstop is a library of UK walks, campervan-friendly pubs and campsites. You can browse it without an account. If you create one, we keep your email, the name you choose, and the places, visits, photos and reviews you add. We don't sell your data, we don't run advertising, and we strip location data from photos before anyone else can see them.

What we collect

  • Your account: email address, display name, and a password. Passwords are stored hashed by our authentication provider; we never see them.
  • What you add: places (name, location, notes, links), walk routes from GPX files, photos, visits (date, rating, notes) and reviews of Bootstop.
  • Your wishlist: the places you save. Signed out, this lives in a cookie on your device; signed in, it's stored with your account.
  • Messages you send us: if you use the contact form, your name, email address and message are emailed to us so we can reply. They aren't stored on the site.
  • Searches: if you search by postcode, that postcode is looked up to find a map point. If you use “near me”, your browser asks first, and your position is used only for that search. Neither is stored.
  • Technical logs: our hosting providers keep standard request logs (IP address, browser, time) for security and to keep the site running.

How we use it

To run your account, show the places you add to you and (once approved) to others, put your name next to visits and reviews you publish, and keep the site secure. We rely on our legitimate interest in running the site, and on your consent where we ask for it, such as your location.

We don't use your data for advertising, and we don't sell or rent it to anyone.

Who else is involved

A few services make the site work. Each only gets what it needs:

  • Supabase stores the database, accounts and uploaded files.
  • Vercel hosts the website.
  • OpenFreeMap supplies the map tiles. Your browser requests them directly, so their servers see your IP address. Map data is © OpenStreetMap contributors.
  • Resend sends the site's emails, such as sign-in links and contact form messages.
  • postcodes.io turns a postcode you search for into a map point. Only the postcode is sent.

Some of these may process data outside the UK. Where they do, they use the safeguards UK law requires, such as standard contractual clauses.

Photos and location

When you upload a photo, your browser reads its GPS position and date to suggest where to drop the pin. It then re-encodes the image before uploading, which removes the location and camera details, so the stored file carries none of that.

Places you add show their exact position on the map. Don't add private land or anywhere you wouldn't want found.

Cookies

We only use cookies the site needs to work. There are no advertising or tracking cookies.

  • Sign-in cookies keep you signed in.
  • bs_wishlist holds your saved places while you're signed out.
  • bs_contact stops the contact form being sent twice in a minute. It lasts one minute.

How long we keep it

We keep your account and what you've added until you ask us to delete it, by emailing the address below. When we delete an account, your details, wishlist and visits go with it, along with any places that haven't been published. Reviews of Bootstop you published stay up under the name you gave unless you ask us to remove them too. Server logs are kept for a short period by our hosting providers.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask to see, correct, export or delete the personal data we hold about you, or object to how we use it. Email us at hello@bootstop.co.uk and we'll respond within a month. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Terms of use

By using Bootstop you agree to these terms. The site is free, run by Bootstop, and offered as it is. You need to be 16 or over to create an account. Please don't copy the site's content in bulk or with automated tools, try to get around its security, or use it to harass anyone.

Things you add

  • You keep ownership of the places, photos, notes and reviews you add.
  • By adding them, you let us show, store and resize them on Bootstop, including after you've made them public.
  • Only add photos and words you have the right to share. Don't copy listings, reviews or photos from other apps or websites.
  • We check new places and reviews before they go public, and we can decline or remove anything that's inaccurate, unlawful, or not in the spirit of the site.

Check before you park

Places are written up by people who've been, but things change. A pub that welcomed vans last summer might not now. Always ring ahead or ask at the bar before parking overnight, follow any signs and local rules, and leave places as you found them.

Walks can involve steep, remote or boggy ground. Check the weather, take a map, and judge for yourself whether a route suits you and your group.

Liability

We do our best to keep Bootstop accurate and available, but we can't promise it always will be. We aren't responsible for losses that come from relying on information on the site, from third-party sites we link to, or from places themselves. Nothing here limits liability that can't legally be limited, such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence.

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.

Changes and contact

If we change this page in a way that matters, we'll update the date at the top and, where it affects your account, let you know by email.
